Whilst we were missing several key players (due to County trials and other reasons) we still managed to take a squad of 20 players to North Petherton. We were up against a very big pack who won a lot of ball in the rucks, scrums and lineouts. However, after 10 minutes (and against the run of play) Tom Hopkins managed to charge down a kick and allowed Jack Miles an easy touchdown. Despite continued pressure from the hosts it took another 10 minutes before they got their first score, and then their second try just before half time. With neither side converting the half time score read 10-5.
Within 5 minutes of the kick-off North Petherton had scored with a good run by their strong centre. Freddie Wadsworth gained a yellow card for a bad tackle and from the penalty gave the hosts another 3 points. During the time that he was off the pitch Sherborne played some great defence and denied the hosts any further score. However North Petherton later scored another try with some strong forward play but again missed the conversion. At 23-5 it looked like Sherborne were down and out. However the character of these players is never in doubt and they came back with 2 tries in the last 5 minutes to make the score more respectable. Lawrence Juliens and Kitt Thomas-Peter the scorers with Tom Hopkins converting one of them.
The match finished 23-17 and North Petherton deserved their win. However all of our players had performed very well to earn that score. Tom Branch and Lawrence Juliens in particular stood out. |
